Speech and Language Evaluation
Our Speech and Language Evaluations can be schedule at our office and at your child’s day care or school.
Evaluations scheduled at your child’s day care or school are typically scheduled with 1 therapist (the goal is for this to be the therapist that will be seeing your child on a weekly basis) and over the span of 2-3 sessions (each session being 30 minutes to 60 minutes). Once the evaluation is completed your child can begin participating within weekly sessions the following week. Your therapist will schedule a 30 minute phone call with you to discuss the evaluation and therapy.
Evaluations scheduled at our office are scheduled on Friday Mornings or Afternoons for a total of 2 hours; however, they may last anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours. Amanda Rollins OR Laura Hagan are present at all evaluations. In addition, most of the time we also have another therapist present as well — our goal is for this to be the treating therapist.
All evaluations are designed specifically to fit the individualized needs of each child and family. Evaluations may include standardized language and articulation testing as well as an informal functional communication evaluation where the Speech-Language Pathologist evaluates the child's functional abilities across areas of play, receptive language, expressive language, articulation, social communication skills (pragmatic language), theory of mind, perspective taking, executive functioning skills and more. Oral motor skills, fluency and voice may also be evaluated on an as-needed basis.
If you have completed a full speech and language evaluation with a different SLP within the last 6 months, please consult with Amanda Rollins as we may be able to use theirs to start OR we may need to conduct our own. In addition, we have many services that do not require an evaluation such as: Homework Helpers, Homeschool Helpers, Language and Literacy, Tutoring and more.
As a parent you will receive: a Comprehensive Evaluation Report, a Treatment Plan for Individual Therapy along with any of our recommendations. It typically takes about 2 - 9 weeks to complete the full written report; however, we can typically being therapy the following week.
Please contact Amanda Rollins at amanda@kidspeakdallas.com for more details on Evaluations, Scheduling, Pricing and more.
What To Expect During an Evaluation
Evaluations conducted on site at our office in Addison. The first portion of the evaluation consists of the therapist engaging with the child without the parent(s). We are aware that the initial separation from a parent may be difficult for some children. Please allow your therapist the opportunity to handle the situation. Initially, the therapist will take the child back to the therapy room where they will engage in informal play procedures like playing with bubbles, a baby doll, blocks, etc. and formal standardized testing if possible. During the formal standardized testing, the child may look and talk about pictures as well as play with more toys as the therapist directs them.
All appropriate paperwork and fees will be handled before the child is taken back to the therapy room.
